Medicaid Coverage

To receive help through Medicaid, individuals must meet certain income and asset guidelines. Medicaid can help pay for Medicare premiums, doctor’s visits, hospital stays, prescriptions, medical supplies and equipment. Medicaid can also help pay for someone to assist with a person’s long term care needs, whether in the person’s home, in a foster home, residential or assisted living facility, or in a nursing home. While Medicare can offer some short term in-home help, Medicaid can provide long term assistance for those who qualify for the benefit.

It is also important to know that when a Medicaid client dies, the Oregon Department of Human Services (DHS) is required by law to recover money spent for their care from the “estate” of the client. Generally, the money recovered is for assistance provided after the client reaches age 55. The Department of Human Services can only collect from the assets available in a person’s estate.

To learn more about Medicaid benefits to seniors and people with disabilities who live in the State of Oregon, see the state's Health & Medical Services website.

To learn more about the estate claim process, view the Estate Adminstration Program brochure (PDF format) available from the state.
