Meals
on Wheels
Subsidized
Meals on Wheels are available to people over the age of 60 and their
spouses who cannot get out much due to illness or advanced age and who
are not eating properly. Each caller will be interviewed as soon as possible
to determine eligibility. Subsidized meals are available as funding permits.
Applicants may be placed on a waiting list for subsidized meals or may
pay the full cost themselves.
Persons under age 60 are eligible
under the following circumstances:
- Resident in a housing facility where a meal is served (Riverview
Terrace in Cottage Grove, Cresview Villa in Creswell, Olive Plaza and
Jacobs Lane in Eugene)
- Disabled dependent child living in a non-institutional household
with a person over age 60.
- Their Case Manager has authorized meals as part of their Medicaid
in-home care package.
- They are willing to pay the full cost of the meal ($7.25 each).
A donation of $3.75 per meal
is suggested in the subsidized meal program, although users contribute
according to their ability. Private
pay customers pay $7.25, the full cost of the meal.

Meals on Wheels are more than just a meal! In addition to the
nourishing meal, users appreciate the regular visit from the friendly
volunteer. There are many in-home services to help you remain independent.
If more help is needed, the Senior Connections Area Coordinator may be
able to suggest some options.
Meals
on Wheels are available in nine Lane County communities and will be delivered
by either Senior & Disabled Services or the American
Red Cross depending on where you live.

The
Meals on Wheels programs serving Lane County residents have created a
private pay option that allows individuals who are not eligible for subsidized
Meals on Wheels to participate. The cost of these private-pay meals
are $7.25 per meal.
The
following groups are among those who may benefit from the new private
pay Meals on Wheels option:
- Any senior who prefers
to pay the complete cost of the meal,
- Homebound adults who reside
in rural communities not served by the traditional subsidized Meals
on Wheels Program,
- Adults less than 60 years
of age with temporary or long-term disabilities,
- Adults recovering from
surgery, and
- Homebound pregnant women.
In Lane County, the Meals
on Wheels program is operated by either Senior & Disabled Services
(S&DS) or the Oregon
Pacific
Chapter of the American Red Cross, depending
on the geographic location.
For more information, contact Sandy
Karsten, S&DS, at (541) 682-4378, or Linn Crooks, Red Cross,

How can I help?
Volunteer!
Meals on Wheels has year around volunteer needs in Eugene, Springfield, Creswell,
Cottage Grove, Oakridge, Junction City, Veneta and Florence. See the Volunteer
page for more information about becoming a Meals on Wheels volunteer.
Gifts!
Senior & Disabled Services' Meals on Wheels program is only partially Federally
funded and receives no State, City or United Way support.
Meals on Wheels participants give to the program through their meal donations,
but many are only able to give a minimum contribution.
Community gifts to Meals on Wheels supplement the participants’ meal donations
and limited public funds to ensure that nourishing meals can be served to our
older neighbors.
Gifts should be directed to the Senior Meals/Meals on Wheels
Program and can be designated to a particular community or to help the program
as a whole. Gifts
can be made:
- For the current needs of the Meals on Wheels program
- To the Senior Meals Program Endowment Fund to supply future income
- By check or credit card
- By giving through a bequest, a will, an insurance policy or stock
transfer
- By Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT)
- By adding Senior Meals/Meals on Wheels Program to your monthly bill
paying option at your bank or Internet bill paying service
- If you would like to donate online, click
here.
Gifts to the Senior Meals/Meals on Wheels Program are deductible to
the extent allowed by law.
Call (541) 682-4378 or e-mail skarsten@lcog.org for more information about contributing to the Senior
Meals/Meals on Wheels Program.
